On 31 December, 2024 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Kęstutis Budrys had a telephone conversation with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov.
During the conversation, the Head of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission expressed his condolences and solidarity with Azerbaijan following the tragedy of the downing of an Azerbaijani Airlines plane near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on 25 December. Minister Budrys stressed the exceptional professionalism of the pilots of the plane, who saved the lives of 29 people on board, and the need for a full investigation into the causes and circumstances of this tragedy.
"A full and transparent investigation into the causes and circumstances of the tragedy is essential to prevent the possible repetition of similar tragedies. GPS signal jamming and other interference is something that Russia has been doing in the Baltic Sea region for some time. We must unite our efforts to protect the safety of civil aviation," Minister Budrys stressed.
The survivors of the disaster and the children of the victims were offered rehabilitation treatment in Lithuania.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister noted that Russia is an increasing threat to the international community, both through its continued criminal military aggression against Ukraine and through various acts of sabotage. During the meeting, the Lithuanian diplomat informed his Azerbaijani counterpart about the recent increase in attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
