Lithuanian representatives attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku
On 11 November, 2024 the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 opened in Baku with discussions on the Paris Agreement's Framework for Action, the implementation of the decisions taken at COP28 in Dubai and intensive negotiations on commitments to reduce climate change.
The Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Lithuania to Azerbaijan, Mr. Kęstutis Vaškelevičius, and the Deputy Head of the Lithuanian Government Delegation to COP29, Ms. Stasilė Znutienė (Ministry of Environment) participated in the World Leaders' Meeting on Climate Action, which took place on 12-13 November.
Delegations from the Ministries of Environment, Energy, Transport, Communications, Finance and Foreign Affairs are participating in the two-week COP29 negotiations.
Deputy Minister of Energy Ms. Daiva Garbaliauskaitė spoke at the event on inter-regional partnerships to accelerate and expand the use of hydrogen in Europe; discussed European competitiveness based on clean technologies with European clean technology industry leaders; and took part in a debate on the development of renewable energy.
Ms. Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, participated in a high-level ITU event on the Green Digital Transition and stressed that digital tools can significantly increase sustainability not only in telecommunications, but also in other sectors; she urged for a digital transformation while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The Acting Minister of the Environment Mr. Simonas Gentvilas and his delegation will also attend events of the second week of COP29, as well as the Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Climate and Security Policy, Mrs. Aušra Semaškienė, will take part in the second high-level session of COP29 from 18-22 November.
