Lithuania-Azerbaijan political consultations held in Baku

On 14 April, political consultations between Lithuania and Azerbaijan took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, under the chairmanship of the Vice-Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries, Julius Pranevičius and Fariz Rzayev. The Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister also met with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bairamov.

During the political consultations, the sides discussed bilateral relations, prospects for strengthening cultural and economic ties, as well as relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan and cooperation in international organisations.

They exchanged views on the situation in the South Caucasus and Europe, Azerbaijan's role in the region and the latest developments in the search for sustainable peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Vice-Minister Pranevičius congratulated Azerbaijan on the negotiation of the text of the Peace Agreement with Armenia and expressed his hope that the Agreement will be signed, which will contribute to the normalisation of relations and the consolidation of stability, long-term and sustainable peace in the region.

Discussing the security situation in Europe and the world, the Vice-Minister noted the importance of Azerbaijan's support to Ukraine as the only way to ensure the security of all of us and to ensure a world order based on international rules.

The visit also included meetings with Adviser to the President of Azerbaijan E. Amirbayov, Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan P. Michalko, representatives of civil society and the local Lithuanian community.

Deputy Minister J. Pranevičius laid flowers and paid tribute to the victims of the Soviet aggression of 20 January 1990, who died on the road to Azerbaijan's independence.
